Elizabeth Leggett | Month of Fear entry for 2018, showing a skull with a black flower coming out of one eye socket
2018 is the first year I have actively participated in the artist project of 2018's Month of Fear. One of those prompts was "Tears."
I have always had a fascination with Memento Mori; a symbol or reminder that life is not forever.  I chose to create a skull that was so aged it was smooth.  I wanted to crack in the skull to be ambiguous.  Was it from age or injury?  The flower and the ribbons are symbols further developing that concept.  Is the flower fresh or silk?  Why has a skull of this age been decorated?  I wanted this piece to be as much about the questions as the answers.

“The very idea of inevitable death, carrying with it the manifest folly of human concerns, is at the core of ruin fetish. Memento mori: You and everyone you know will die and become wreckage plowed under and renewed, because that’s they way of all things. Fight it and be terrified; accept it and know peace. Live accordingly.”
