Harbinger of Pestilence

Elizabeth Leggett | Portico Arts Harbinger of Pestilence

Looking out towards the sea, those left are given a lonely task. Waiting is a career for stern hearts.  The widow's walk is a tradition brought from Europe to the Americas

Pestilence is a poisoned friend of trade and community but all that build their lives in goods take her presence as a cost worth paying.

I did not want my harbingers to have a clear role. Is she a wife waiting for her husband, a daughter waiting for her father or simply a prostitute? Is the ship coming or going? The clothing colors were chosen not only to groove with the background visually but also to hint at skin colors in illness.

This is one of four pieces in a series, along with Harbinger of War, Harbinger of Famine, and Harbinger of Death.

"It's because of the Irish Sea so narrow with no reef,
It's because of those ships that do sail,
Dublin Lady has to sit and weep alone all in her grief,
It's because of those ships that do sail.
It's because of the Irish Sea so narrow with no reef,
It's because of those ships that do sail,
Dublin Lady has to sit and weep alone all in her grief,
It's because of those ships that do sail."
 - Andy M. Stewart and Manus Lunny (Song- "Dublin Lady")
