Flying Fish - Portico Arts - Art Print by Elizabeth Legget
I saw a snippet of a National Geographic (I think) special about the discovery and excavation of giant Buddhist sculptures found in the sea.  The still photo had a boat and men beside a half raised stone head. I loved the idea of sculptures as tiny islands, as refuge in the ocean.  I also wanted to see if I could create the look of living bone.  Once I had, it needed a symbol of growth so I added the tree!
As far as the hand and the boat, this is a small homage to my mom. She was a single parent and most of the time had trouble keeping her head above water, but she was always so very centered and calm. She rarely lost her cool and she usually had some genuinely off-the-wall plan to make things better. (Which usually worked!)  She wore a long, cloisonne, reticulated fish pendant pretty regularly. I was absolutely fascinated with that thing for years! Even when things were tight, she made a point of putting on a little sparkle to make things better.
When I realized this piece needed a splash of color, I remembered her necklace. I think it makes a lovely ship!
