Sandstorm - Portico Arts - Art Print by Elizabeth Legget

Desert skies fill me with awe.  It really doesn't matter the weather, they all sing for me.  I think it is the immenseness of it, the unfathomable light.  My daughter chuckles at me when I lean up to look at the clouds through the car window.  Amazing!

My husband discovered a driving route not far from our home that shifts unexpectedly from urban to empty nothing and desert canyons. (ed note :  Albuquerque to Cuba on US-550 at sunrise or sunset)  He drives and chuckles too when I gape at the scenery.

For this piece, i was interested in trying to create the visual of wind.

“There was a desert wind blowing that night. It was one of those hot dry Santa Anas that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch. On nights like that every booze party ends in a fight. Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands' necks. Anything can happen. You can even get a full glass of beer at a cocktail lounge.”
